Each year, the Orange County Reading Association recognizes one deserving classroom teacher, school principal, literacy coach or other educator in Orange County who exemplifies OCRA’s spirit of outstanding contribution to literacy. This year, OCRA is proud to award Carrie Pavlik with the Outstanding Contribution to Literacy Award for 2019.
Carrie is the Library Technician at Jordan Elementary School in Orange Unified School District. Colleagues and other educators in the district have described her as an innovative leader, someone open to new ideas and a person devoted to encouraging readers of all ages. She is known for hosting an annual In-n-Out party for her million word reader club members, buying Krispy Creme donuts for all students who pass 10 reading counts quizzes in the year, getting books as gifts for teachers and her students in addition to hosting fantastic themed book fairs. Her leadership and commitment to her students demonstrates her passion for promoting literacy for the betterment of their educational experience. Congratulations, Carrie Pavlik!
As a non-profit association, one of our goals is to promote literacy both on a local and global scale. In spring of last year, we celebrated the efforts of an organization that has made significant contributions promoting literacy worldwide. OCRA awarded The Little Green Monster Project with the Celebrate Literacy Award for spring 2019! The founder, Dr. Sharon Chappell, developed The Little Green Monster Project to help parents and children talk about cancer diagnosis, treatment, survivorship and loss through the arts. The project strives to use the creative arts to process feelings and stress and assist with healing during the cancer journey. www.littlegreenmonster.org.
